Recorrido por la Sierra Gorda
Pinal de Amoles y Jalpan de Serra son municipios colindantes queretanos a los cuales corresponde una parte de la Sierra Gorda. Se encuentra a aproximadamente 3 horas en coche de la ciudad de Querétaro (150 km aprox.) por la carretera hacia Bernal.
Dejando atrás Bernal, la carretera ofrece una paisaje impresionante del principio de la Sierra Gorda. Mientras uno sube por las curvas en las montañas, el clima cambia drásticamente de árido a boscoso.
Rio Escanela, Cañón de la Angostura y Puente de Dios
La primera parada la hicimos pasando el poblado principal de Pinal de Amoles, continuamos sobre la carretera por aproximadamente 30 minutos hasta llegar a una desviación hacia la izquierda (KM 155) señalada “Rio Escanela y Puente de Dios”, en el municipio Jalpan de Serra. Continuamos por la terracería pasando algunas casas y llegamos a un poblado en donde se encuentran un hotel y el área para acampar que también tiene cabañas, señalado como “campamento la Gloria” (precio por acamapar: 50 pesos por persona con equipo 100 pesos por persona si se renta el equipo). Más tarde, los habitantes nos señalaron hacia el módulo de información, en donde se proporciona un guía para el recorrido por el río hacia Puente de Dios (el cual tiene un precio de 130 pesos).
El recorrido comienza caminando río arriba, en un paisaje boscoso alimentado por el agua cristalina. Los primeros minutos recorren la orilla de río y pasando por puentes improvisados de madera, hasta llegar a un lugar llamado “El Cañón de la Angostura”: un jardín de piedras y posas creadas por el paso del agua. Se continúa por algunos pasajes entre piedras con la ayuda de escaleras y atravesando el río a pie, hasta llegar a “Puente de Dios”: Una especie de cueva rocosa formada por el río, con grandes estalactitas que chorrean agua y alimentan al Río Escanela.
Cascada el Chuveje
La segunda parada la hicimos al salir del campamento en Río Escanela, continuando por la carretera (saliendo de la terracería del camp a la izquierda) por aproximadamente 15 minutos. Bajando por una curva la desviación a la derecha se encuentra casi de frente, y está señalada como “Cascada El Chuveje”. Se recorre una terracería por aproximadamente 10 minutos, hasta llegar a un estacionamiento y una reja. Aquí se encuentra la entrada y el principio del recorrido (30 pesos por persona).
La caminata dura aproximadamente 25 minutos, es muy ligera y atraviesa un paisaje similar al de Río Escanela: Bosque tupido, con tonos ocres y bordeado por follaje seco, alimentado por el rio que continúa de la cascada. Toda la caminata está bien señalada y marcada, incluso hay algunos letreros donde presentan los nombres de la flora. A lo largo de ésta, se observan pozas naturales que caen en pequeñas cascaditas que alimentan las vertientes del río. Tras atravesar algunos puentes, y rinconcitos mágicos de agua traslúcida y árboles caídos, finalmente se llega a la cascada. Éste imponente desplome mide unos 30 m de altura dejando caer el agua en una poza cristalina, poco profunda, rodeada de varias plantas, enredaderas y rocas, haciendo una vista imponente.

Roadtrip in La Sierra Gorda
Pinal de Amoles and Jalpan de Serra are adjoining townships in the state of Querétaro to which a part of the Sierra Gorda belongs. It is an approximately 3 hour drive from Querétaro city, and about 150 km away, taking the freeway to Bernal.
After passing Bernal, the freeway offers an impressive view of the Sierra Gorda. As you drive through the curves of the mountains the climate suffers a sudden change from a semi-desert to woods.
Rio Escanela, Cañón de la Angostura, and Puente de Dios
We did the first stop after driving past the principal town in Pinal de Amoles, and continuing on the road for about 30 minutes, until we arrived at a deviation to the left (km 155), signalled “Rio Escanela y Puente de Dios”, at the township Jalpan de Serra. As we continued through the dirt road, we saw some houses and arrived at the tiny town, where the camping area is (signalled “La Gloria”, it has cabins as well), alongside a little hotel. In the camping area the price for the night is 50 pesos per person, however if you do not have any equipment you can also rent it, and pay 100 pesos per night per person. Later on, the townspeople led us to the module of information, where a guide is assigned for the tour (130 pesos).
The hike begins walking up river, through woods and trees fed by the crystal clear water. The first minutes go by the edge of the river through wooden bridges arriving to a place called “El Cañón de la Angostura”: a rocky garden filled with natural pools of the crystal bluish water. As the hike goes on, it passes through narrow rocky tunnels and stairs, before having to cross the river by foot and getting a little wet, just to arrive at “Puente de Dios”. This marvellous cave formation, has big stalactites from which water pours and feeds the river, creating a beautiful sight.
Waterfall El Chuveje
Our second stop began after we left the camp and continued on the same freeway (to left after the dirt road), we drove for about 15 minutes and arrived at another deviation to the right (it comes after a curve and it is basically right in front of you). At this signal “Cascada El Chuveje” you continue through the dirt road for about 10 minutes, the grid and entrance to the hike appears right in front, and it offers free parking. As you enter you’ll pay 30 pesos per person in order to begin the hike.
The hike lasts about 25 minutes until you reach the waterfall, it is very light and it offers a similar landscape to the one in Río Escanela: Beautiful forest, with ochre tones, and a river which is bordered by the fallen leaves of the trees. It is a well-signalled hike, and it even offers some information on the flora of the place. While hiking, the scenery offers natural pools and tiny waterfalls that fill the smaller veins of the river. Finally, as we arrived to the waterfall (30 mts high), we were enveloped by the Green and rocky pool that it forms, it is a very shallow pool, however the sight is very impressive. You can see the clear water wetting everything and creating a place filled with plants and overall life.
